The
Society is a
European federation of
national
higher educational associations for the study of English. The Society
endeavours
to reflect the cultural and geographical diversity of Europe in its
institutions.
The aim of the Society is to advance the
education of the public by promoting the European study and
understanding of English languages, literatures in English and cultures
of English-speaking peoples.

21 April 2008: the winners
of ESSE Bursaries for 2008
have been announced.
24 March 2008: Colleagues are invited to propose topics
and editors for volume 14. 3 and for volume 15 (2011) of EJES,
the official journal of ESSE. For more information, download the call for topics.
17 January 2008: The latest President's Column can be
downloaded as a Word®
document. ESSE members can also download it in pdf format as it
appeared in The Messenger 16.2 (password
required).
11 September 2007: the
ESSE Database of English Studies
Journals (European Publishers) compiled by Dr Fritz-Wilhelm
Neumann at Erfurt University, Germany, is now on line, and can be entered
from
here.

from national associations...
2 April 2008: Professor Clare Hanson,
University of Southampton, has been appointed
President of CCUE,
the British association.
2 April 2008: Dr Aoife Leahy has been appointed
President of NAES, the Irish
association.
19 March 2008: BAAHE, the Belgian
association, has just released the first issue of its new journal: English Text Construction
(successor of BELL), an
internationally refereed journal of English Linguistics, Applied
Linguistics and Literary Studies. More information can be found on the
journal's
website.
16 January2008: the Romanian
association,
RSEAS, has a
new website.

January 2008: The Estonian
association
having given no
sign of any activity
for several years, its affiliation to ESSE has been suspended from
today.

The next ESSE Conference,
ESSE 9, will take place at the University of Aarhus, Denmark, from
Friday 22 August to Tuesday 26 August 2008. Information about ESSE 9 is
available from the ESSE-9
conference
website.
The deadline for sending proposals and abstracts to convenors is 1
March 2008.
