    María Teresa Turell

María Teresa Turell passed away in Barcelona last April 24, at the untimely age of 63. She was Professor of English Philology and worked successively at the University of Barcelona, the University Rovira i Virgili in Tarragona and, since 1993, the University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona.
She was an expert in forensic linguistics, director of the ForensicLab at her University and President of the International Association of Forensic Linguists (IAFL) since 2011. She wrote expert witness reports on plagiarism detection, authorship attribution and trademark litigation in over sixty cases in Spain and the US, and often gave evidence in civil and criminal lower courts and higher courts in Spain. In 2002 she was elected President of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies (AEDEAN) and in 2004 Director of the Institut Universitari de Linguistica Aplicada (IULA) at the University Pompeu Fabra.
She published extensively within the field of linguistics, lectured at several universities in Europe and the US, belonged to a large number of committees and editorial boards, dedicated a good part of her time to university administration, and was indeed a recognized outstanding scholar. Maite Turell will be greatly missed by friends and colleagues and will always be remembered as a person full of energy and optimism to the very last. Blas de Otero, one of her favourite Spanish poets, has the answer that could soothe our loss:

If I have lost my life, time, everything
I threw, as if it were a ring, into the water,
if I have lost my voice in the undergrowth,
    I still have the word.
We lost her voice, we still have her words. And our memories.

Memories of the ESSE-11 Conference in Istanbul...
