1. The Board approved the recommendation of the Book Awards Committee that the Book Award in the category of literary studies is given to Clare Brant for the book Eighteenth-Century Letters and British Culture published in 2006 by Palgrave Macmillan, and no prize be awarded in the categories of linguistics and cultural studies.

2. The Board approved the re-admission of the Latvian association into ESSE as of the 1 January 2009.

3. The Board accepted a proposal made by the Editor of The European English Messenger to provide more space for advertising in The Messenger and to extend the range of advertisers. It will be at the discretion of the Editor to decide about the suitability of advertisements on the basis of content.

4. The Board accepted a proposal made by the Editor of The European English Messenger to create a short announcement section for the members of ESSE in The Messenger dedicated to recent book publications and academic events in English studies in Europe.

5. The Board agreed to the transfer of the ESSE Database of Journals onto the ESSE website.

6. The Board accepted a proposal made by the Webmaster to create space for advertising on the ESSE website. Such advertising will be always combined with advertising in The European English Messenger, and the Board also agreed that a section for advertisements for jobs in English Studies in European institutions of higher education should be established on the website.

7. The Board decided to raise the maximum sum to be awarded for Type A bursaries from 1000 EUR to 1500 EUR from 2009 onward. Sufficient money was budgeted to enable the award of up to 8 bursaries in total of the full amount of money. The deadline for submission of applications for bursaries will continue to be 1 March in each year, and the money must be used by 1 March the following year. Only electronic applications will be accepted. The geographical location of the stay of the bursary user will no longer be limited to English-speaking countries. The Board appointed the new Bursary Committee for year 2009 - Gyorgy Szonyi (Hungary), Maria Georgieva (Bulgaria) and Marcus Walsh (UK).

8. A Nominations Committee for the nominations of the President of ESSE and the Editor of The Messenger in 2009 was appointed by the Board – Risto Hiltunen (Finland), Smiljana Komar (Slovenia) and Alberto Lazaro (Spain).

9. The Board appointed 6 members of a new Academic Programme Committee for the ESSE 10 Conference in 2010 in Torino – Dominic Rainsford, Liliane Louvel, Andreas Jucker, Giuseppina Cortese, Carlo Biagetta, and Marina Vitale.  

10. The Board of ESSE decided (by vote) that the ESSE 11 Conference in 2012 will be in Istanbul (Turkey).
