NAES was founded in 1980.
The number of members affiliated to ESSE through NAES in 2011 is 148.
Membership of NAES is open to academics active in departments which are responsible for the teaching of English at tertiary-level educational institutions in Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland. Members of fee-paying departments from Denmark and Norway are affiliated to ESSE through NAES, while Finland and Sweden are affiliated directly to ESSE through their own associations, FINSSE and SWESSE.
The current President is Tim Caudery.
The current Secretary is Tale M Guldal.
The current Treasurer is Roy Sellars.

The Nordic Journal of English Studies, published by the Department
of British and American Studies, University of Oslo, is associated with
NAES. It is published twice a year.
